What is a Tracker Template™?

Track-n-Graph is a powerful information tracking and graphing solution that allows you to track just about anything. A Tracker Template defines what information you want to track (your weight, heart rate, blood pressure, sales figures, etc.) and how you want to view it (through various types of graphs).

Why use templates?

Templates allow you to define information you want to track, and then re-use that template anytime you want to track that type of information again. For example, imagine you own 2 cars (a sports car and a sedan) and you want to track your cars' mileage over time. Using templates, you create 1 mileage tracker template that defines the information and views related to mileage tracking. Then you create 2 trackers (1 for the sports car and 1 for the sedan) from the template. Each tracker inherits the data definitions and views from your template. If you add a view to your template, both trackers will automatically get the view because they share the same template.

If there is specific information you want to track about your sports car then you can modify that tracker without affecting the sedan tracker. This is one reason templates and trackers are so powerful together, templates allow you to define a central definition and set of views while trackers allow you to customize them for individual needs.

The Community Benefit

One benefit of using templates is that we can store the data with the trackers instead of the template, so the template can be shared among a group of users without sharing the actual data. This separation of the data and the definition allows us to create the Track-n-Graph catalog community where users can share their templates without exposing their own data to the community. If you create a cool template that you want to share with others, simply publish it to the catalog and anyone can use it to create a tracker!

All trackers are based on a template, whether it is a community template or a personal template you created. This means that trackers created with the same template all share at least some common data definitions. In the future, with your permission, we will begin consolidating data across the entire Track-n-Graph community so that you can use it in your graphs. For example, if a large number of people in the community are using a certain weight tracker, we could summarize weight information by gender, age, and location. Then we could make that data available to you to include in your graphs for comparison. This would help you determine how you rank or compare against similar people in your area.

Who can create templates?

Anyone. You can create them for your own personal use or publish them to the Tracker Catalog™ anytime you want. There are no restrictions on the number of templates you can create.

How do I create a template?

First, you must have a FREE account on Track-n-Graph, then you can create a template from a variety of starting places within the site: from the Tracker Catalog, your "My Templates" section, or your "My Stuff" page. Watch our video tutorial on creating a template for the best way to get started.
